There are many Christians who do not understand the very serious nature of the King James Only heresy. They suppose that KJVers prefer the 1611 Bible over all other translations, believe that it is the very best of English versions, and perhaps use the KJV to the exclusion of all other Bibles. Unfortunately the King James Only movement goes far beyond such a moderate belief and practice. Christians who do not exclusively use and defend the KJV as the perfect Word of God are viewed as disobedient and/or ignorant. King James Onlyism teaches that true blue KJVers should separate from their less obedient brethren, or at least diligently seek to win them to “The Truth.”
Such charges may be true of arrogant debaters on both sides of this argument; but are however, patently false. It labels those who hold to this position as haughty, separatists, relegating anyone who disagrees as disobedient and/or ignorant. His bias shows throughout his article. May did, nevertheless, manage to make one statement without the reckless charges. He writes
Instead it teaches that the KJV is the one and only perfect Bible and that all modern translations are corruptions of the Word of God.
To that allegation we would plead guilty. The moniker ‘King James Only’ was given to those who hold the Authorize Version as the preserved, infallible words of God, much in the same way the word ‘Christians’ (Acts 11:23 ‘cristianous’) was first applied to the followers of Christ. It was derogatory, and it stuck.
We will attempt to show briefly that the KJO argument has merit. We will document the beginnings of and final emergence of the Authorized Version, its meteoric rise in popularity after its publication, its usage in early America and England, and will attempt to inductively show the demise of England after its adoption of the revised version of the 1886 and the same in America after the now bankrupt 1901 American Standard Version was promoted.
The time in history from approximately 500 A.D. to 1200 A. D. was labeled in most early histories as the dark ages. The appellation has been changed to “middle ages”. That is perhaps because that period of time was dominated by the Church of Rome. With no intention of offending any Roman Catholic reading this, it must be clearly stated that the church then kept the people under religions bondage. One popular method of control was demanding money to pray your loved one out of purgatory. The term was “indulgences”. Anyone familiar with the history of those times knows that when ‘push came to shove, the popes held rank over kings and other heads of state. The act of Henry IV standing barefoot in the snow for 3 days begging Pope Gregory VII for forgiveness illustrates the power of the papal system during that time.
The renaissance came as the “schoolmen’ (roughly 1200 to 1500) began to write. Humanism became the new religion and those who endured the cruel reign of the papacy found themselves able to voice their beliefs freely. Learning and logic became a passion and forms of Christianity that had been mainly silenced by Rome, (Montanists, Priscillians, Paulicians, Paterines, Mesalines, Euchites, Nestorians, and Sabellians. Later they were known as Vaudois, Brethren, Bogomiles, Albigenses, Huguenots, Waldenses, Henricians, Bulgarians, Petrobrusians, Berengarians, Arnoldists, Cathari, Ana-Baptists) began to express themselves publicly. It was near the end of this time that Martin Luther Nailed his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg Church.
The explosion of learning and religion put one man on a mission. Steven kreis, author of an article on The History Guide writes, “Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536), one of the greatest humanists, occupied a position midway between extreme piety and frank secularism.” (Read: A strong belief in God and a no mystical frills approach to religion.)
Among the achievements of Erasmus was the collection and collation of all the then available manuscripts of the Greek New Testament. Erasmus heart was “'I wish that the Scriptures might be translated into all languages, so that not only the Scots and the Irish, but also the Turk and the Saracen might read and understand them. I long that the farm-laborer might sing them as he follows his plough, the weaver hum them to the tune of his shuttle. Erasmus produced the first complete translation of the New Testament into Latin, and then a Latin/Greek version. His work was too late for Wycliffe. An Oxford professor who has been called “The morning star of the reformation,” he produced the first hand-written Bible in the world around 1380. Wycliffe’s English translation was from Jeromes Latin Vulgate. The translation from Greek and Hebrew would be left to William Tyndale. Tyndale was a scholar in the truest sense of the word. He spoke Hebrew, Greek, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish German and English, fluently.” Tyndale is credited with the first printed Bible. He was also an Oxford scholar. Tyndale hated the Catholic doctrines and answered one individual with his famous retort ‘I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my life ere many years, I will cause the boy that drives the plow to know more of the scriptures than you!’ Before his death at a fiery stake he uttered his last words. ‘Lord, open the king of England's eyes.’ Three years later under King Henry VIII, The English Great Bible was printed. It was the very first complete printed English Bible. Tyndale’s prayer was answered.
Gutenberg got the first printed version with his newly invented movable type press. It was printed in Latin. English versions following were the Tyndale, Matthew's, Coverdale's, the Great Bible, the Geneva Bible, the Bishops' Bible, and the King James Bible. Without going into detail on each of these endeavors, it is worth stating that with the exception of the Geneva Bible, most Christians have never heard of the others. But no Christian can feign ignorance of knowing there is a translation called the King James Bible. They may have heard it put down, or exalted, been told it is too hard to understand (now go study your Shakespeare!) or that it is hopelessly out of date. Others with a more ‘scholarly’ approach will tell us that the King James Translators didn’t have the manuscripts available to work with that modern translators have. That, of course, is not entirely true. The King James Translators had the essence of the Alexandrian texts in Origen Adamanticus’ Hexapla, a six columned Greek Old Testament which included a Hebrew text, four different Greek versions, and the Septuagint, which is clearly identical with the Siniatic manuscripts Some scholars believe the Septuagint is none other than the Siniatic manuscripts itself.
Peter S. Ruckman, Phd, in his book Problem Texts states
"I have a copy of the notorious Septuagint on my desk (Zondervan Publishing Co.1970, from Samuel Baxter & Sons, London). In the Introduction, the party line of the Alexandrian Cult is laid out as neatly as a tiled floor. Our writer says 'THE FACT' may be regarded as 'CERTAIN' that the Greek Old Testament LXX had begun to be translated before 285BC. The evidence for this? Don't be silly; the Alexandrian Cult never deals with evidence.
The Vatican manuscript, held under lock and key at the Vatican (Protestant scholars have facsimile copies) is written on Vellum (animal hide) and was discovered in Egypt. Siniaticus, also written on Vellum and found in Egypt was later found by a man named Tishendorf in a waste receptacle at Saint Anne’s Monastery in Mt. Sinai, so it is incorrect to flatly state the King James translators were short on information modern day translators possess. Vaticanus and Siniaticus are the two main manuscripts behind all the new versions including The New King James which professes fidelity to the received text, but cheats adding readings from the Egyptian manuscripts.
A bit more about manuscripts; they are now generally divided into two groups. Egyptian, or Alexandrian and what is called the Byzantine or received text. (The Western “Family is now generally disregarded) The Alexandrian manuscripts were written on animal hide called parchment. The Byzantine or received text is written on papyrus. Papyrus was used by the ordinary ‘citizen’. They could ill afford Vellum or Parchment, which could be written upon and then possibly scraped out to form what is called a palimpsest, but that’s about it. Parchment was durable. Once written upon it had a long “shelf life”. Papyrus was semi-durable, similar to crude paper. It could not be easily erased, but with care it could be read over and over. Bound books known as “Codices” were now competing with scrolls. The Egyptian manuscripts were Codices. An Individual manuscripts was a ‘Codex’. Hence, Codex Alexandrinus, which is a minor witness in the Alexandrian family. This information is valuable for the simple reason that the Alexandrian Codices were found in the Egyptian dry climate in a fairly well preserved state. Altogether there are roughly ten manuscripts in the list of manuscripts that compliment Vaticanus and Siniaticus in their producing all the new versions of the scripture. On the contrary, there are now over five thousand manuscripts, including papri, which are numbered fragmentary pieces and other forms of papyrus witnesses, some of which date earlier than 350 A.D.
Paul, the apostle warns even during his own life time of “many, which corrupt the word of God” (2Corinthians 2:17) It is clear that there were those who desired to corrupt the Holy Scriptures even before they came off his pen! Corrupting God’s words has been in vogue since the serpent tempted Eve. His famous opener “yea hath God said?” (Genesis 3:1) helped plunge humanity into the flawed characters we all must eventually admit we are.
Understanding the above, the website gotquestions.org says “There is absolutely no evidence that the Bible has been revised, edited, or tampered with in any systematic manner.” Our writer is fudging. He will slide through the web of lies by using the word “systematic”. He does not define systematic, therefore he cannot be accused of saying there is absolutely no evidence that the Bible has been revised, edited or tampered with. We will call his hand. With over 200 new versions, all children of the Alexandrian tradition, the King James Bible has been systematically edited and tampered with! Every new version is an edition, a revision! There are over 63,000 changes that are not orthography or spelling errors. Those are the kind of lies calmly put forth as fact by those who cannot believe that a God who gave us a perfect bible could preserve is purity.
There has always been a division between the bookish ‘scholars’ and the common reader. The early Christian that had been brought to faith in Christ wanted to know what was written. Without printing presses they had several methods of obtaining copies of the then extant scriptures. The most common was to use copyists. From the early days of copying the Old Testament by the Levites of Israel, a group of writer sat or stood at a writing table and would write what was spoken by the leader, who read from his correct copy. Safeguards were religiously observed in ancient Israel. When a page was finished, each letter in each line was meticulously counted. If the letter count was off, the page was discarded. In the copying of the New Testament the same methods were used. They were careful, but not as religiously careful as their Levite predecessors. Some errors did creep in, however manuscript ‘detectives’ learned how to spot obvious mistakes. With the multiplicity of copies rounding out to over 5000 over 1400 years an accurate accounting could be given. Papyri, which are numbered fragments attest to readings found in the receptus (kjv) manuscripts as well as the Alexandrian manuscripts, so the witness of the common bible is found as early and in some cases earlier than the Vellum manuscripts. That is important; those favoring the new versions like to tell us that they are based on the earliest manuscripts. Their Vellum manuscripts are dated as early 350 A.D. So are the papyri. The charge is false.
The ‘pilgrim fathers’ brought both the Geneva Bible and the King James when they sailed to the New World. While the Geneva Bible was used in the beginning, the KJV soon out did the Geneva, and literally exploded into use by the general public. It was the Bible that built the our country. It was taught in the ‘one room school-houses’ where America’s leaders learned the three R’s. It was the only Bible used for two hundred and fifty years in America and that it was the only Bible in use during America’s Civil War, gives credence to the truth that her people, though divided, still believed in the ‘good book’. The Bible was the textbook on the rightness or evil of slavery.
In 1886 the revised version was completed in England, but the seeds of change occurred long before the revision appeared. Janet Mosher and Barbara Ato, in their article The History Of English Bible Revision The "Unauthorized Version" remind us that as early as “1816 - The American Bible Society [was] founded by New York philanthropists whose objective included translation as well as circulation of the Bible.” The actual translation was not finished until 1886. Started in England in 1883 the committee was almost at once dominated by B.F. Westcott and F.J.A. Hort, whose objective was to actually replace the received text, also called the “textus receptus” with an entirely different Greek based manuscripts Working mainly with the two Codices, Aleph and B, (Vaticanus and Siniaticus) but pretending to be introducing only necessary changes, they introduced thousands of changes to the underlying Greek text of the Authorized Version.
The lives of Westcott and Hort have been scrutinized acutely, and some damaging material has been brought to our attention. To call attention to the fact that in addition to their interest in scripture translation they were also interested in communicating with the dead is not an ad hominem attack. An article on Historist.info reveals
Westcott and Hort were not only ‘Fathers’ in the Anglican church but, according to numerous historians and New Age researchers, appear to be among the ‘Fathers’ of the modern channeling movement… [The]Ghost Society [was] founded by no less a person than Edward White Benson, the future Bishop of Canterbury. As A.C. Benson writes in his father’s biography, the Archbishop was always more interested in psychic phenomena than he cared to admit. Two members of the Ghost Club became Bishops [Benson and Westcott] and one became a Professor of Divinity [Hort]. Again, “.
Deuteronomy 18:9 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
Deuteronomy 18:10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
Deuteronomy 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Writing to C.H Chambers, Hort proselytizes:
I sent you two ghostly papers; you can have more if you want them, but I find they go very fast and the 750 copies which we printed go by no means far enough. We are promised a large number of well-authenticated private stories, but they have not arrived yet. Our most active members are however absent from Cambridge; to wit Westcott at Harrow and Gordon at Wells.
At the risk of boring my reader, Westcott’s son adds to the evidence. He writes, concerning his father.
“Westcott took a leading part in their proceedings and their inquiry circular was originally drawn up by him. He also received a number of communications in response.” Westcott’s “Ghostly Circular” reads in
part: But there are many others who believe it is possible that the beings of the unseen world may manifest themselves to us. . .Many of the stories current in tradition or scattered up and down in books, may be exactly true.
Lastly, Hort’s subterfuge needed to be made public. His son again testifying
Westcott determined that public involvement in the Ghostly Guild “led to no good.” In 1860 and 1861, Hort wrote to Westcott of their mutual concern in this regard. “I [T]his may be cowardice – I have a sort of craving that our text [‘New’ Greek Testament] should be cast upon the world before we deal with matters likely to brand us with suspicion.”
Such men, with their profound ignorance of the scriptural warning against such activities, and their extreme bias against evangelical Christianity, no matter how learned they were in the original languages of the scripture, nor their professed Christian experience, were not the kind of men to be involved in revising, or rather desecrating the book that had earned the accolades of scholars not just for its truth, but for it sublime linguistic beauty as well.
What was the result of such proceedings? In America it was first displayed as the ASV of 1901. Strangely the American translators agreed to delay production of the revised version in America for fourteen years. Why? England obviously expected to sell a great number of them and wanted to access the American market before America produced their own revised version. Fourteen years later they did. The American Standard Version of 1901 was a financial flop. Without going into detail, the New American Standard Version replaced it. It was more widely accepted, but was still just an “Americanizing” of the British R.V. The manuscripts basis was still Alexandrian.
From 1901 on in America ‘bible production mania’ was in full swing. There are now over 200 different translations, all children of the Alexandrian text. Of course many of them never saw the light of day, but nonetheless most of them were published. Among them all, the most popular translation in America from the Egyptian manuscripts is the New International Version. Of all the new versions the NIV has the claim of being top among the most popular versions. We will direct our attention to it. While the Authorized Version has strong prohibitions against changing or removing verses, the NIV proceeds to do so with carelessly. The warnings are clear, but if you believe them to be faulty then you may ignore them. We might add ‘at your own peril’. What are the warnings? We will list several.
· Deuteronomy 4:2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish [ought] from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
· Proverbs 30:6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
· Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.
So just where has the NIV departed from the old standard? The examples are to numerous. We will list the most obvious, and then give a short compendium of New Testament verses that have been tampered with.
Isaiah 14:12 KJV.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! [how] art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
Same verse NIV
How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!
Problem – Jesus is identified as the morning star. Lucifer has been exhalted and Christ demoted.
Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.
The following verses are altogether missing in the NIV.
Matthew 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Matthew 18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Mark 7:16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Mark 9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 9:46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Mark 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Mark 15:28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
Mark 15:36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put [it] on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
Luke 23:17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believes with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
There is, as the saying goes, much more. There are books available that will document thousands of these changes and deletions. In a short paper like this it is only possible to present the barest evidence for this topic. It goes without saying that if the Bible is unworthy of our perusal; that if it is seen as only a collection of flawed writings by religious minds, then all the above is superfluous. However, if it can be reasonably proved that the Bible is indeed the words of the living God, then it behooves us to pay attention. If any proof could be offered it would have to be mathematical. Any circular reasoning about the Bible’s veracity coming from statements within the documents making up the Bible would be meaningless.
But such proof is available to any open mind. Peter Stoner [was] M.S. Chairman of the Departments of Mathematics and Astronomy at Pasadena City College until 1953; Chairman of the science division, Westmont College, 1953-57; Professor Emeritus of Science, Westmont College; Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Astronomy, Pasadena City College. Stoner’s work is in the science of statistical probabilities. He refers to known, observed fulfillment of scripture and does the math to show to any sound mind the foolishness of discounting the scriptures. Stoners work has been peer approved. (see Sources cited for link) (The issue of Bible versions today is hotly contested. The opposition has a bucket full of arguments that we simply cannot get into without another 35 pages. To summarize, they will camp on the false idea that there is much more material available to modern translators. We would dispute that and have done so somewhat in this treatise. They would cry that even with all the changes, which they approve of, that the KJV is based on later manuscripts, and since by their dictum, oldest means best, the new version therefore stand above the KJV. This has been disproved by the fact that Greek readings supporting the KJV have been found that are as early as or earlier than their corrupted parchment cousins. They will justify eliminating verses, mistranslating verses with the poor excuse that the new versions are easier to read. Clearly a non-sequitur. This has been proven false by the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Indicator. In this chart, compiled by G. A. Riplinger the reading levels are displayed and compared.
Was everyone aware that Zondervan is owned by Harper Collins? Harper Collins is owned by Rupert Murdoch who also conveniently owns Fox, Fox News, Myspace.com, Wall St Journal, The Sun, Down Jones, News Corp…I don’t know what it is, but I was hoping there was a little bit of purity in the Christian publishing business. I had no idea that it was part of a massive media monopoly. It makes me sick. How much Christian literature is marketed and sold as nothing more than a marketable product?
Time will not permit us to examine the gross corruptions in the Alexandrian manuscripts Suffice it to say that they differ from one another in thousands of places. Will Kenney, quoting Dean Burgon gives us this
Most of the over 5000 New Testament differences between the King James Bible and modern Bible versions like the NASB, NIV, RSV, Living Bible, and others, are the result of mainly two manuscripts which allegedly date to around 350 AD called Sinaiticus (Aleph) and Vaticanus (B). Dean John William Burgon, personally collated the Sinaiticus and Vaticanus manuscripts. In his book, "The Revision Revised", which he wrote in 1881, he gives his opinion and lists undeniable facts about what these two manuscripts say. Mr. Burgon states on page 11; "Singular to relate Vaticanus and Aleph have within the last 20 years established a tyrannical ascendance over the imagination of the Critics, which can only be fitly spoken of as a blind superstition. It matters nothing that they are discovered on careful scrutiny to differ essentially, not only from ninety-nine out of a hundred of the whole body of extant MSS… besides, but even from one another. In the gospels alone B (Vaticanus) is found to omit at least 2877 words: to add 536, to substitute, 935; to transpose, 2098: to modify 1132 (in all 7578): - the corresponding figures for Aleph being 3455 omitted, 839 added, 1114 substituted, 2299 transposed, 1265 modified (in all 8972). And be it remembered that the omissions, additions, substitutions, transpositions, and modifications, are by no means the same in both. It is in fact easier to find two consecutive verses in which these two manuscripts differ the one from the other, than two consecutive verses in which they in which they entirely agree."
On page 319 he remarks, "In the Gospels alone Vaticanus has 589 readings quite peculiar to itself, affecting 858 words while Aleph has 1460 such readings, affecting 2640 words."
Choosing a Bible is serious business if indeed one believes it to be true. Philosophically, if we hold one Bible as the final authority, it judges us. If we are permitted to choose between 3 or 4, no longer is the book judging us, but we, it. The King James Bible which turned America’s pulpits into bastions of ‘flaming’ truth, and built what was once a world power based on Christian values has been replaced with mediocre substitutes, and our churches into irrelevant institutions. England, while its preachers thundered truth from a King James Bible was head of the nations. It was rightly said, “The sun never sets on the British Empire”. England, which abandoned the King James Bible in 1886 has become a third world country, overrun with Mohammedans. America officially turned its back on the KJV in 1901. Twenty years later the wickedness of this country earned the moniker “The Roaring Twenties”. To get America’s attention, God gave America a dust bowl in the West, the great depression along with a president that confiscated your Gold and sowed the seeds for the socialist state we now live in. More, newer and better Bibles have produced a decadent society along with an unparalleled ignorance of the scriptures. There has not been one major revival that took America by storm like those under Sunday, Moody and Whitfield, who all preached from a KJV. Those days are gone. We will sadly witness the demise of Christian truth in America. Without a wholesale, Holy Ghost revival, America is lost at sea in a subjective multicultural, politically correct godless ocean. Without a return to the God-Honored text of the Bible of the protestant reformation, the Martyrs Bible, produced at the cost of the lives of those that brought it to us, we can only sit back and watch the destruction of our country, and the damnation of its citizens.
